You Do What?! for a living? 5 creative ways to come out or further pursue your career as a writer

  1. Buy some plain coffee mugs then get them engraved with something witty. Coffee quit working. Writer at work. Oh, I said come up with something witty; didn’t I? I bet your creative genius/muse could come up with something golden, after all, you’re a writer! Gift them to your family and friends as commemorative gifts for completing the first draft of your first novel.
  2. Put fluorescent sticky affirmation notes all around your house. On the notes write yourself reminders to take time to write, remind yourself why you write and most importantly, affirm that you are indeed a writer. For good measure, write at least one message in the third person that says : ______is a writer, will work for coffee or ____. (Fill the first blank in with your name and the second with your choice of reward.)
  3. On a random day, tape a Not Tonight Dear, I’m Writing, message to your bedroom door. Let your better half know you mean business. After all, it’s not every night you get to work on your novel. Is it?
  4. Buy the crappiest popular novel that comes to your mind and read it, twice. Once to study any structural/content/grammatical errors or plot holes and the second time to remind yourself that if *they made the best seller list, you have that potential too.
  5. Don’t tell anyone you’re a writer, just write and they will know. This is the most tried and successful method I have come across. Oh, and don’t forget to brew the coffee first.
