What position do you do it in? Are you lying down, sitting up, hunch backed? Do you do it in the morning or at night? Do you do it barely awake or only after your morning coffee? I’m talking about your writing routine, of course, and the many ways people like to write.
Personally, I like to do it first thing in the morning in the kitchen on days that my children sleep past five a.m. If you’re a parent I’m sure you can imagine how often that is. The hard surface of the kitchen table offers a comfortable resting position with my hands at the keyboard while demanding that I sit *somewhat at attention as I write my prose. I hardly do it without coffee although I sometimes will do it without much sleep.
There are the coffee shop, internet café and recreational writers, who can do it just about anywhere they please as wherever they go the muse follows. I am not among the blessed whose keyboards pour out stories when my fingertips hit the keys. Okay, sometimes I am. (But, please don’t tell anyone; it’s a secret and this is a personal matter.)
There are those of us who don’t do it, don’t know how to do it, or who have just begun doing it. Please encourage them in their writing endeavors and remember the old adage; practice makes perfect. That book or script is not going to write itself, so not matter how good you or the muse is at doing it in your bedroom, or wherever you happen to write, so long as you are doing it, eventually everything will come together and you will achieve the ultimate bliss ; a finished first draft.
Happy doing it; I mean writing.
